Schapekahm, Weddendorf, Ruemke, Huevelmann Gathering

This is an extraordinary photo postcard of several prominent New Ulm families that are related to each other. Represented are the Schapekahm, Weddendorf, and Ruemke families and Albert Peter Boock. On the parlor wall is a photo portrait of Adolph Klause, who married Ida Boock (A.P.'s older sister) in 1892.

The postcard was sent from New Ulm by Emma Elisa Ruemke (Mrs. A. P.) Boock to Emma Aufderheide (Mrs. Arthur L.) Boock, Spencer, Wisconsin, on 14 February 1910. The inscription reads: "Dear Cousin: The ornament I sent you was not a gift from me but from [Minnie and Louis] Broe[c]ker's. It arrived here a week or so after Xmas with the family presents. This postal will be of interest to you there are but a few of the specimens on here. With regards to the Boock family. [signed] Emma Elisa."

Dr. Arthur and Mary Buryk Aufderheide Wedding Anniversary

Dr. Arthur Carl Aufderheide and Mary Lillian Buryk were married on 26 January 1946 in Minneapolis. Both Art and Mary were born in 1923. Mary was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Buryk of International Falls. Arthur's parents were: Herman J. Aufderheide, formerly secretary to the late Governor Floyd B. Olson, and Esther Sannwald Aufderheide, New Ulm.

Mary, a graduate of International Falls High School, completed her nurses' training at the University of Minnesota in June 1945, receiving a B.S. and R.N. degree. She was currently teaching contagion nursing as well as doing general supervision at General Hospital in Minneapolis, according to the Minneapolis newspaper writeup of the wedding.


Arthur graduated from Dr. Martin Luther College, attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, and was currently a senior medical student at the University of Minnesota. The article continued, that he was about to graduate from the UM Medical School on 21 March 1946, and then would take his internship at Rochester General hospital in New York State.

Today, Art and Mary continue to lead very active lives; Art teaches Pathology and Labratory Medicine at the University of Minnesota-Duluth and shares his passion for paleopathology with Mary. Dr. Aufderheide was a member of the 1967 Plaisted North Pole Expedition. Mary has played violin with the Duluth Orchestra for many years.

Art and Mary's three children are married (all in 1988): Patricia married Stephen Schwartzman, Tom married Anne Robertson, and Walter married Densie Holt.

NEW ULM— Robert ‘Buddy’ Aufderheide, 87, of New Ulm died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2007 at the Oak Hills Living Center in New Ulm. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in New Ulm with Rev. Todd Nelsen officiating. Burial will be in the New Ulm City Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor. Visitation will be 3—6 p.m. Saturday at Schmucker Funeral Service in New Ulm and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Robert George Aufderheide, the son of Karl and Clara (Weddendorf) Aufderheide, was born May 15, 1919 in New Ulm. He graduated from New Ulm Public High School in 1937 and from MacCalester College in 1942. He participated in high school, Legion, college, and New Ulm town baseball, with his teams winning two state championships in 1934 and 1941. Buddy was also a member of the 1937 State Basketball Team. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving an honorable discharge in 1946. He later served during the Korean Conflict in 1951.

Buddy was united in marriage to Helen Simones June 18, 1944 in Minneapolis. The couple made their home in New Ulm where Buddy was co-owner of the New Ulm Brick and Tile Yard until his retirement in 1982. He was inducted into the New Ulm Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame and Legion Hall of Fame in 1987. Buddy was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in New Ulm where he served as choir director, organist and also as a choir member. In addition to baseball and basketball, he enjoyed bridge, wild flowers, bird watching, crossword puzzles, and coin and stamp collecting.

Survivors include his son, Dale Aufderheide and his wife Lois; daughter, Diane Aufderheide and her special friend Stuart Klotz, all of New Ulm; five grandchildren, Mark Winterfeldt, Jr. and his wife Jessica, Karl Winterfeldt and his wife Shawn, Adam Winterfeldt and his fiancĂ©e Lindsey Davis, Bob Aufderheide, Travis Aufderheide; three great grandchildren, Hope, Grace, and Jaden Winterfeldt; nieces and nephews. Buddy was preceded in death by his wife, Helen on Oct. 31, 2006; his parents; brothers, John ‘Jack’ Aufderheide and his wife Joyce, Carl Aufderheide and his wife Janet; twin sister, Ruth Salter and her husband Bill.
